The Nairobi hustler

So you’ve had your ‘twelve years a slave’ episodes in the big city, I can relate considering that since you graduated from college you have gone through all types of hustles to survive in this busy town, I mean product activation, casual contracts, sales, internet marketing, writing and God knows what else – you’ve done them all. The real hustlers of this town probably know all the corners of the city, you have either interviewed, delivered a product to a client, had an appointment or attended an audition in like every part of town. The city seemed big to you when you were new or young  but now you feel like it is just a small estate. You know you have been around the block when you walk in town and it’s like the faces you see just seem familiar despite some of them being total strangers.

MONEY OR PASSION

Just the other day you were in high school or college and all the talk was bout passion but since you stepped into the real world, you can’t just ignore the fact that money plays a big role in survival. Considering that you are in Africa where passion doesn’t seem to have weight, you decide to have a job that pays you as you follow your passion on the low-key,  you do that for a while but one day your friend who went straight into business after school and seems to be doing just fine motivates you to abandon your day job and follow your passion full-time. You take the bold step considering that you had learned how to survive even without a job in the first place. It doesn’t seem easy for the first few months but you press on considering how you are enjoying your new freedom, you are your own boss now and you develop some discipline. Since you are running your own errands, you have to work ten times harder than when you had a guaranteed income but you don’t care because you are building your mini-empire. you’ve learned to ‘go for the money’ with all your passion, at least you have your money and passion both in the same focus now. At this point, Rick Ross the big boss become your inspiration considering his ambition and hustling spirit. Life goes on for a hustler. You even question your college certificate since you feel like you are just doing fine without using it but again you realize it served its purpose – that of raising your caliber of thinking.

FRIEND OR FOE

Since you started making a living, you were told “you are always alone” , “there is no friend in this game” and whatnot…but you realize that life is not really like that, you remember that client that always refer your services to other customers, that guy that keeps on alerting you on new opportunities and everything. You don’t have imaginary enemies or friends, you just ‘know your circle’ . It is like you have a team plus you have developed a tough skin for any form of attack or ill will. You’ve had all the tough lessons and it is like you are a mature hustler now and you smile when you look back on how far you have come as a person.

With time, you look for a purpose bigger than hustling and making money considering that you are getting old…

Yours truly!
