Is There a Profession of Cheaters?

I was having a discussion with a couple of friends about which profession has the most cheaters or philanderers. And they raised an interesting point.

If you are to say that people in X profession are likely to stray because they are around the opposite sex more, travel away from home more, or the nature of their work is intimate, then we shall have a case for every profession.

I have talked here about which jobs can get you laid a lot the most or are likely to get you baddies, like photography, tattoo artist, sex expert or creative director, because these jobs are unconventional and attract men with certain sexy archetypes.

Now, back to which jobs can easily make you stray, my friends thought that every profession, whether it is a tailor or plant operators or truck drivers, can cheat, but I disagreed. Some jobs put you in environments where something like an illicit affair can easily happen.

I have been fortunate enough to work in diverse industries, from aviation to advertising to film to writing and everything else in between.

The environment in advertising and that of aviation is totally different. It is like studying in a city day school and going to a missionary boarding school in a remote part of the country. The rules and lifestyles are completely different.

Let me paint you a picture of what the office environment was like when I was working in advertising, and I still do, I just no longer hold a desk job. There was a mini bar in the office that would open on Wednesday and Friday. There was no official attire; guys would rock dreads, beach shorts and even vests in the office.

The ladies would wear crop tops, jeans on a Monday, short dresses, and it was common for guys to smoke weed at work sometimes or during lunch break; you would find guys smoking weed in the basement.

The alcohol at the bar was pretty cheap, and now that it is the end of the end-of-year party season, they would bring strippers to the party, both male and female strippers.

Which of those two environments encouraged cheating? If your man was working in advertising, which attracts very sexy people from wealthy backgrounds who tend to be very hedonistic, are open to adventure, and are naturally creative with bleeding souls. It is a total recipe for a sex fest.

Now compare that to the aviation industry where you were likely to be spending time at the hangar filing flight hours or perform  maintenance. Now, in the aviation industry, if you were a flight attendant or a pilot flying across the world, then opportunities for sampling exotic women or men might present themselves.

It is very similar to filming or acting environment, which I also frequented a bit, so much freedom on set to have fun and indulge.

However, these industries I am talking about that attract hedonists like creatives don’t rank as such when it comes to divorces. The notorious culprits for divorce and cheating are military guys, firefighters, pilots, nurses and even teachers, which is quite strange because I don’t see people in these industries as being disloyal.

Loyalty and discipline are big in the military and the nursing profession. Even firefighters seem to be quite odd to me when it comes to cheating and divorce.

I expected massage guys, waitresses, and salesmen or even lawyers, to cheat more and divorce more. However, apparently whoring is not something you find in low-income jobs or the lower-middle-class part of society; the hair salonist or massage guy working 12 hours a day, Monday to Sunday, just to keep the household afloat, doesn’t have much time or opportunity to stray or sleep around.

Compare them to a gym instructor or yoga instructor who holds an authority figure towards their client and work in a vulnerable environment where touch and leadership is combined. Men from such an environment are likely to stray because opportunities are there. If your gal is getting a Zumba instructor or a personal trainer, be on alert.

Now it is not about people in these professions being ‘cheats’ or ‘bad people’ as such. It is about the environment and how it makes people vulnerable and predisposed to cheat. If someone had an opportunity to cheat and they have a little trouble in their relationship, they will take it as a gateway from their boring life.

Let’s say you are having troubles at home or in your relationship. And you work a job that allows you to travel to nice places with beaches and sand, exotic spots. And you meet a Thai massage specialist or a hot waitress in a beach bar or hotel where you live. You are a foreigner and she is a local, and there is mutual attraction. No one will know, you are far away from friends and family. The chances of you straying are very high. Nothing will prevent you from going all the way.

You didn’t cheat because you are a bad person; an opportunity presented itself, and you were in a moment of weakness. Even if you are in a stable relationship, you would have considered it a bit or entertained the thought.

A friend of mine went for a massage once. She didn’t intend to do anything naughty, but the massage was so hot. The masseuse touched her so well that she asked him if he could just finish the job, or rather, finish what he started. The massage guy didn’t go all the way but gave her his number for an after-work arrangement. You see how that happened.

None of those people wanted to stray; they were just looking for services, and an opportunity to stray showed up.

We are all primal at an instinctual level, and no matter the civilizations and rules trying to control how we act, if our primal instincts or rather carnal desires are stimulated, we will tend to act on them. If a job allows any form of touching or sexualization, or breeds an environment for intimacy or hedonism or attracts certain sexy archetypes. You are likely to find illicit or casual affairs in such an environment.

So yes, it is true, some professions have cheaters, or rather attract certain personalities that tend to be sensation seeking or high sex drive. I suspect military guys made it to the list not because of environment but high drives.

In my article, I shall look into whether you can date people with hedonistic careers such as strippers, only fans models or belly dancers or just waitresses.

Till then.
